Shopping
in the city

Shopping makes us feel good, especially during a holiday or a trip out of town, when we’re more relaxed and have more time to spend on ourselves. So, as we stroll through the city centre, maybe stopping for an aperitif on the way, we sometimes happen to make the purchase we’ve been looking for a while, or take the chance to pick up some of the flavours and fragrances we enjoyed during the holiday, to take home as a souvenir.

Shopping in Aosta

Surrounded by the Roman walls, Aosta's historic centre offers a wealth of opportunities for shopping enthusiasts, with both the classic stores of the famous franchising brands and the chance to explore local boutiques specialising in classic clothing or sportwear, as well as perfumeries, concept stores, shops selling typical products and small craft workshops. As you stroll along Via De Tillier, Via Aubert and Via Porta Pretoria, you’ll find fascinating shop windows, including those selling sportswear and mountain apparel. As you explore the streets of the town centre - perhaps after enjoying an ice cream or a slice of pizza, or visiting the splendid Roman Theatre - you will come across small goldsmiths' workshops, offering an excellent opportunity to choose a gift, surprise someone you love or treat yourself. Where Aosta really comes into its own, however, is in the field of handicrafts and traditional food and wine, offering souvenirs large and small to take home once the holiday is over. Wine, cheese, cured meats, grappa and sweets: there is something for all tastes and for all occasions. During the Sant'Orso Fair, held every year on the 30th and 31st of January, you won’t be able to resist buying a souvenir made by the skilful hands of local craftsmen; but there are opportunities to treat yourself to a traditional object all year round, thanks to "L'Artisanà", a shop under the porticos of Piazza Chanoux that has been displaying and selling fine local craft objects since 1942. These unique items express our local tradition, allowing you to bring a touch of the Aosta Valley into your home.

Before you leave

At the end of your stay, make sure you pick up some typical Aosta Valley food and wine products to make your holiday seem to last longer. Why not try one of the 4 D.O.P. products (Fontina, Fromadzo, Lardo di Arnad and Jambon de Bosses) or have a go at some of the recipes you’ve tasted in the restaurant? When it comes to food and wine, you’ll be spoilt for choice. The expert shop owners will be able to advise you and tell you about our typical products and how best to enjoy them even when you are far from the Aosta Valley. As regards wine, you can purchase some directly from producers (located in municipalities near Aosta), and the centre also offers a wide range of high-level wine shops. Finally, those of you with a sweet tooth will love the famous tegole valdostane, available in many of the pastry shops in the centre. But be warned: they’re very moreish, so they might not make it home with you! From cheese and wine to clothing and handicrafts, the centre of Aosta offers everything you might want to take home: just take a stroll through the characteristic, uniquely beautiful Roman neighbourhood. Shopping in Aosta is not limited to the city centre, of course. For example, in Viale Conte Crotti, in the north-west of the city, visitors will find everything from good food and delicious sweets to fashion, especially for women, and furnishing accessories. A visit to Viale Conte Crotti is well worthwhile, not least because it is a stone's throw from the Megalithic Area, a place of ancient history in the city.
